Torres Garcia Museum and the Tower of Communication

Torres Garcia was born in 1874 in Uruguay, and left to Barcelona at the age of 17 where he studied arts. In 1920 he travelled to New York to produce and sell toys, and then he travelled to Italy, some years later he travelled to France and in 1934 he came back to Montevideo where he established the art workshop. He died in 1949. Four years after his death the Torres Garcia Museum opened its doors, since then more than 200.000 people have visited it.

Murals In 1949 Joaquin Torres Garcia and some of his students made the biggest and most significant mural work in Uruguay to be on display at Saint Bois Hospital. Its purpose was to improve the quality of life of people suffering from tuberculosis.

Murals Restoration 1978 there was a fire in which many of the murals were lost and some damaged. In 1997 ANTEL (National Administration of Telecommunication) took charge of the restoration of the murals which are now shown in the brand new Torre de las Comunicaciones (Tower of Communications).

It was amazing to realize how quickly communication has changed for good. This brings me back to childhood when in a journey to Punta del Este my mother once told me: "Some years from now we are going to be able to talk on the phone in the car." She was right.

In 1991 the first cell phones came to Uruguay. They were so, so big that were called bricks!

But going deeper in the past I came to know that the first phone call in Uruguay was in 1878 and that the first public phones were installed in the mid-60s.
To sum up, it’s outstanding to think of the idea that all we know about communication has been developed in just a century.

We finished our visit to the tower on the 26th floor of the building enlightening ourselves with the breathtaking view of the city.

Located on a pedestrian street in "ciudad vieja", this museum is dedicated to the works of Joaquin Torres Garcia. Virtually unknown in North America (at least to me), he is perhaps the greatest Uruguayan artist and is even commemorated on local currency.

The free museum has several floors with modest displays of his abstract artworks. Take the elevator to the top floor and work you way downward. The front of the museum has a smallish souvenir store with a decent selection of books and various gifts.
