This is Wisconsin's largest maritime museum. It has a gallery dedicated to Wisconsin-built recreational boats, hands-on activities in the Children's Waterway Room and Little Lakefarer's Room, and a working triple-expansion marine steam engine. They also offer guided tours of an authentic WWII submarine, USS Cobia.

The museum is undergoing remodeling, but it was not a distraction. My four year olds had fun talking to each other on the submarine phone and pushing the button to make the dive alarm go off. A ship's "wheel" was fun for them to use while pretending to sail their own ship as pirates. I enjoyed learning about the evolution of the submarine and how the Manitowoc Shipyards built many kinds of boats. The submarine tour is almost 45 minutes long, so the children got a little antsy, but it was very interesting and I know living on a submarine couldn't have been easy. Because my children couldn't read, they didn't get the educational value that a middle schooler would, but they had fun looking at the large engines and the small models of many different types of ships. There is a family rate that will be cheaper than mentioned above if you have two adults and at least two paying children. Their website is wimaritimemuseum.org.

Wisconsin Maritime Museum

The Wisconsin Maritime Museum is housed in an outstanding facility built especially for the museum in the 1980s on the Manitowoc River near the Inn on Maritime Bay. Along with an excellent collection that celebrates Manitowoc's history as a city of shipbuilders and Great Lake sailors, there is also a World War II submarine floating adjacent to the museum that visitors can tour. The U.S.S. Cobia is representative of the many that were built right here in Manitowoc during the Second World War and submariners from throughout the country occasionally come back for reunions here. Today, the Manitowoc shipbuilding tradition continues by way of the Berger Boat Company, whose staff of artisan craftmen build custom pleasure craft worth millions per edition. Launchings of these luxury craft are major community events. The museum is well-done and interesting -- well worth a look. Web address: Maritime Museum
