Cane Garden Bay

While in the British Virgin Islands, my family and I decided to stop off at Tortola’s famous Can Garden Bay. Located right near Road Town, Cane Garden Bay is an island enthusiast’s dream destination. While driving over beautiful mountains to get there, your breath is taken away by the pristine sights of the water below.

As a local hangout and a tourist sight, the beach fills up rather quickly, but not enough where you are right on top of everyone, but more than many other beaches on the volcanic island strip. The sands are soft and tightly packed, making the walking soothing and relaxing and the terrain is ideal for the outdoor runner. When you arrive at the beach, there are hoards of local salesmen trying to rent you a lounge chair for a couple of dollars. They will bring them down, wipe them off and then stand there forever waiting for a tip. Even as you walk down the beach towards the luscious mountain sides, other salesman will almost jump over each other to make sure that you rent from them. Even if they already asked you, they will keep hounding you; remember, tourism is the biggest money maker.

The waters are always calm and cool, but the snorkeling is not the best. With ships moored not a hundred yards out, the bottom is constantly kicked up by passing marine traffic, so the underwater sights are harder to see. But there are coconuts everywhere and they make a great water sport toy. They float and make great shot-puts or even floating devices.

Anyway, this beach should be on your top ten, even top three things to do in Tortola because it really is unsurpassed. And bring your sunscreen; the sun is brutal down there!

Cane Garden Bay

This crescent-shaped beach is very popular and, since it is not far from Road Town, gets many visitors. Too many visitors, maybe - my peace was interrupted by the arrival of a noisy group and their loud stereo. But nevertheless it is a great beach, beautiful, with great swimming and snorkeling (some people saw a barracuda and a stingray, I only saw the usual colourful coral fish), watersports available if you want, and many restaurants. I spent the whole day there and enjoyed it a lot. One popular attraction is Quito Rymer, a local musician who performs at his bar, Quito's Gazebo, at night, offering good reggae music.
