Imagine walking down a street and passing by a band playing Cajun zydeco, bellydancers, and hearing the throbbing beat of a Caribbean dance tune. You've just experienced Festival International. This festival is one the premiere festivals of South Lousiana. Held the last week of April, the festival brings together French speaking countries from all over the world. Booths are set up from restaurants all over the city, everything from the ever-present Cajun food, to Mediterranean, to good old American BBQ. While walking around you can view work from local artists and craft booths that have a little bit of everything imaginable. It's truly a wonderful and unique experience.

One of the coolest festivals in the US, this also happens to be the largest French-speaking festival in the country. Don’t worry, though, most everyone speaks English, too, though the accent may be a bit difficult to get used to. The festival is free and is basically a giant weeklong street party in downtown Lafayette. Bands and performers come from all over the world for the festival. There are cooking demonstrations, dancing, theater, art exhibits and great food from across the globe. There’s even a special area for kids, with storytellers and games. I used to live a few blocks from downtown and my favorite memory of Lafayette is the sounds of the festival playing into the night through my open window. It’s truly an amazing experience, and the best part is- it’s free!
