During the winter, visitors to Harvard Square often wonder just how Cambridge residents make it through those five long, cold, windy and snowy months between fall and spring. The answer is this cosy little chocolate cafe, tucked into Brattle Street between two unobtrusive storefronts. Burdicks specializes in handmade chocolates, as well as coffee and chocolate drinks of all varieties.
Highly recommended is the hot chocolate - you can get milk, white, or dark hot chocolate, and it comes in heavy white porcelain mugs that are piping hot. Basically, it's chocolate in liquid, heated form, but who cares about the gym when faced with this dazzling array of indulgence?
Other classic Burdicks treats are the tiny, chocolate mice - or, order one of their amazing mini-chocolates. You can also get drinks or treats boxed up to go, but half the charm of Burdicks is sitting inside at one of the five tables, sipping, gossiping and people watching. People do tend to linger, so you might have to wait for a seat, but it's definitely worth it.
Also, make sure to bring your wallet - Burdicks ain't cheap and they don't take credit cards!
