Description: Also known as the Giza Necropolis, the Great Pyramids of Egypt are one of the world’s wonders, a universally fascinating example of ancient architecture and achievement. Situated on the Giza Plateau, on the outskirts of Cairo, the Giza Necropolis includes the three pyramid complexes known as the Great Pyramids, in addition to the Great Sphinx, cemeteries, a worker’s village and ancient industrial complex. The largest of the pyramids if the Great Pyramid of Giza, also known as the Pyramid of Khufu. The second largest is the Pyramid of Khafre, while the most modest of the three is the Pyramid of Menkaure, just west of the Great Sphinx. The Pyramid of Khufu was built over a 20 year period around 2,560 BC, and stands 480.6 feet tall, making it the tallest manmade structure in the world for over 3,800 years. An estimated 2.3 million limestone blocks mined from local quarries form the structure of the pyramid, while massive granite rocks supported the internal infrastructure had to be shipped from over 500 miles away. Visitors can enter the Great Pyramid today, via the Robbers’ Tunnel - a tomb raider’s tunnel into the complex, dug 1,300 years ago.
