You really cannot put into words the immense size of these creations until you are standing in their shadows!
For me, this was a trip full of wonderment for split reasons. Of course, the first was just total awe at the reality of something I had dreamed of visiting since I was a little girl, the second however was amazement at how close in reality that they are to the heart and everyday life of Cairo. I had been forewarned that the city was fast encroaching upon the Pyramids but nothing could prepare me for just how close they really were.
The size of these is awe-inspiring and rapidly brought home when you climb just the first few steps of the 'Great Pyramid of Khufu' and realise how large each of these blocks is and how many still tower above you.
We decided against trying to enter either of the bigger pyramids that were open (apparently one is always closed on a rotating basis - for restoration work), and instead went into one of the queen’s pyramids. These are very much smaller but you still get the feeling of entering an ancient tomb, dark, claustrophobic and airless, although it was good to have had the opportunity to say we had been in.
Don't also miss the Solar Barque Museum to the side of Khufu's pyramid ... maybe a little pricey but worth a look at the photos of the reconstruction and of course a look at the boat itself. To be honest most people seemed to be avoiding this, but I found it helped me to put into perspective the enormity of the pyramids when this seemed so small in comparison.
The only down side was the usual touts trying to sell everything from mini pyramids to tea-towels to water, very persistent but eventually after a lot of 'la shokrans' they seem to disappear.
Last but of course not least ... we came to the sphinx, we actually got a lot nearer than I perhaps thought we might, but unfortunately it was like being packed in a tin or sardines, so many tourists in such a little space all desperately jostling for camera space. I would highly recommend coming first or last thing in the day to see this sight.
