Telluride Ski Area

During one day of our road trip, we skied the Telluride ski area. I was not pleased. I skied the area with my parents, and we usually like to ski the intermediate level slopes. No mater what slope we skied, we always ended up on an area you have to cross by poling. It was more work than fun. The ski area is 22% beginner, 38% intermediate, and 50% expert. They have several lifts and trails and are open daily from 9am until 4pm.

It's hard to imagine a prettier place than Telluride. Its remote location makes it a little hard to get to but worth the trip. I've skied here 7 or 8 times, and the scenery never fails to impress. I'm mostly an intermediate, but Telluride offers plenty of terrain for any skier--they have some of the steepest, bumpiest stuff you'll see, as well as a nice variety of intermediate terrain (though they lack any really long cruisers). The town is getting a tad overbuilt as BIG money pours in, but it still retains a lot of its old charm.

The Telluride Mountain has no lift lines, and there is great access to the slopes just about anywhere you stay. I bunked down at Etta Place Too through ResortQuest, which was only a few steps away from Chair 7. The prospect bowl area was great, but as a boarder, you have to keep your speed up for the run-outs... Gold Hill had great terrain, which was both steep and deep with powder. My favorite run was the PLUNGE--it seemed to last forever for a black diamond run.

On our way back from exchanging one of our timeshare weeks in Pagosa Springs, CO we stopped in Telluride for the first time, where a two-day stay turned into five. It will not be my last visit as it vaulted up the ladder of my favorite ski areas. Telluride is a fantastic place for a skiing or snowboarding vacation. The town reminded me of Zermatt in one respect as there is one way in and the town ended at the base of the mountain. Although the skiing is to the right at Telluride and Zermatt ends at the majestic Matterhorn with skiing on the left.
The architecture of the buildings downtown mix history with five star accommodations and fine dining establishments. It's also not hard to find a local watering hole that will undeniably possess character. There are also many shops, boutiques and spas that are first class.
For the 2001-02 season, they just opened a new back bowl ski terrain which has increased its size considerably. There is currently over 1,700 skiable acres. The lifts gave you an ample opportunity to see some of the impressive homes along the mountain and the runs were quite long. The mountain has a diversity of slopes that will appeal to all levels of skiers from beginners to mogul kings. If you stay in downtown Telluride take the gondola and it will drop you off at the main ski lodge at Mountain Village. The mountain averages 300 inches of snow per year.
Our hotel, the Hotel Columbia which is located at 300 West San Juan Avenue, is directly across the street from the gondola. We had our puppy along and this hotel allows pets. Although at 70 pounds I am not sure if I should be calling her a puppy anymore. Telluride itself is very pet friendly, there is a dog path along the river that is great for walks and it is equipped with "dog stations" for lack of a better term. Okay, there are poop bags in boxes mounted on poles along the way.
