Separating the northern suburbs from the business and shopping centers of central and south Bombay is Mahim Creek, a beautiful effluvium of faeces, inorganic waste, and industrial run-off. Enjoy a stroll over its gently rippling black waters in the monsoon, when the stench is especially great. Simply go to Mahim Junction, cross the railroad tracks, and follow the footpath that turns into a small bridge abutting a giant sewage pipe. Cross the river at your leisure; if you’re lucky, the locals will stop to strike up a friendly chat--or to push you into the river. It’s just their way of saying, “Hi.”
