Wakulla Springs

Wakulla Springs State Park & Lodge is located 14 miles south of Tallahassee on S.R. 267 at S.R. 61. Before making the trip call to find out is the Glass bottom tour is runnig. If the water isn't clear they don't run. The drive in is beautiful. Watch carefully for Alligators on the banks of ponds, streams or crossing the road. Once you arrive get your ticket for the cruises as there is usually a wait for the boat. There are two cruises. Glass bottom which goes over the the 185 ft springs and you can see the bones of a real prehistoric mastodon. A complete mastodon skeleton was removed and is in the Tallahassee Archeological Museum. The glass bottom cruise is also where you'll see Henry the pole vaulting fish. Corny !YES!, memorable absolutely! The Wakulla River or Jungle Cruise is a 2+ mile tour of the river is far more scenic than comparable rides at Silver Springs or Weeki Wachee. You'll see an abundance of wildlife, including a host of birds and alligators. During the winter, the spring becomes a prime spot for bird watching as thousands of migrating species pass through. There is a lodge and rates start at $55/night. There is also a 6 mile hiking trail, a museum and a swiming area. A word of caution: Swimming is not allowed beyond the safety rope although the alligators on the other side don't usually bite... not usually. The water here is a constant year round chilling, dare I say refreshing 70 degrees. You shouldn't miss the opportunity to visit this Florida gem.
