Santorini

The main town on the island of Santorini is at the crest of a large hill with very steep access roads. The fun way to get to the top is on the donkey back. For a handful of Drachmas a guide with a donkey will help you sit in the saddle and guide the animal to the top. It's fun but slow. Alternatively you can take a few minutes of funicular ride to get to the same place. Once on top and the sun is shining this is a wonderful place to sit and view the landscape. From the top one can clearly see the crater filled now by the ocean and the edges forming nearly a circle. There are several towns on the island and recently they have uncovered a pre-historic village with many artifacts already unearthed and cleaned.

The start in Istanbul was great. We had two days in town and did the covered bazaar (my wife's favorite) where we bought her a nice reasonably priced leather jacket. We also visited the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the spice market and best of all Topkapi Palace, a must.

After a visit to Kusadasi, the entry port for Ephesus, and a wonderful visit to these Roman ruins, we proceded to Rhodes where we visited the Castle of the Knights Templar. Next we landed at Delos, the home of the Greek gods. Here one tours many ancient ruins and the guide tells the story of the residence of the gods. Only healthy men were allowed on the island in ancient days. From there to Santorini, one of the prettiest islands along with Mykonos. Santorini represents the remains of a huge volcano which exploded several thousand years ago. It is thought to be the lost continent of Atlantis described by Homer. Here the white-washed houses and the church on top of the hill beckon the traveler and walking through town is a delight. Jewelry stores abound and the prices seemed reasonable. Then on to Mykonos and the fabled windmills. This would be a wonderful island to spend a week or two on vacation. People are friendly and the food is good, be sure to try moussaka.
