Black River

There were five of us, and we got a boat all to ourselves. Other boats were full (maybe around 30 people), but that might be because they were a tour group. The river guide will tell you a lot about the crocodiles and mangroves. The river looks black, but the water is really clear and you can even drink it! I tried and it tasted fine. The crocodiles are territorial animals so they are usually spotted at the same places most of the time. We saw four crocodiles in total. They are really calm and laid back—not aggressive at all. We even threw some chicken into the water and they just slowly came to eat it instead of snapping away. The mangroves are beautiful and some are very old. The boat ride was so relaxing. We were told that we could swim at one point, but none of us wanted to.The boar ride isn't that long considering how far away St. Elizabeth Parish is from Negril (Parish of Westmoreland) but it was definitely worth the trip. You can go do other stuff while you're in the area.

Black River

We went on the Black River Safari Ride. It was great. The water looks pitch-black, but put it in a cup and it is so clear. The trees are huge and the crocodiles are awesome. The tour guide lures them towards the boat. It was a great time. You can bring your drinks with you on the boat. It was very relaxing and the locals are always happy to see a new face and maybe sell a carving or two. It costs about $75 and includes your transportation, a traditional Jamaican lunch, and a great experience at the Black River and falls. We also stopped at a large flower nursery and at a local stand for peppered shrimp. You can purchase a bag of shrimp for $5. They are good and hot. This is a trip that is good for all ages.

Even if you are not getting bored hanging around the beach, you should take a day trip to Black River, located in the St. Elisabeth district. From there you can take a boat safari and view various types of aquatic flora and fauna including crocodile, the boat driver may or may not show you one of the most famous plants produced in the island.
