Ocean Spray Cranberry World

I had no idea how cranberries were harvested until this tour. I guess I thought that they were like grapes and just picked from a vine. But no, the bogs where the cranberries grow are flooded with water, and the berries floated to the top and are collected with special equipment. The visitor center has many educational displays containing facts about cranberries and their harvest and production. Wander through at your own pace to see all of the interesting exhibits. Don't expect this to be Disney World--this is a free tour, but nonetheless, it is quite entertaining. Taste testing and purchases of Ocean Spray products are available at the end of the tour.

It would have been great as it wasn't mentioned in any of the Cape Cod brochures. A very unusual and classic New England crop which is typical to the region.

Ocean Spray's Cranberry World

Besides whale watching and pilgrims, Plymouth, Massachusetts and its surrounding areas is the central cranberry growing area of the United States. As you drive along Highway 3 around Plymouth and Carver, you can see the many cranberry bogs that are scattered around the area.

Plymouth is home to the Ocean Spray Juice Company and Ocean Spray's Cranberry World. Cranberry World has demonstration cranberry bogs and displays about the history of the cranberry. There are also displays on how the cranberry is grown and harvested, and a tour of the factory where the famous Ocean Spray Cranberry juices are made. Yes, there are free samples!

Ocean Spray Cranberry World is a great way to take break from all of the historical attractions in Plymouth and is fun for adults and children of any age.

This was a bit of a disappointment. We thought there would actually be a huge cranberry bog to view, but apparently Ocean Spray has farmers across the country that grow the berries for them. There is a small "sample" bog just outside the main building/museum but it is only about 10ft x 20 ft. and is nothing spectacular to look at.

Inside, the museum is interesting. There are old farm implements and pictures of local farmers from the turn of the century.

The highlight was the ability to buy Ocean Spray's products at low prices and the chance for some samples at the end of the tour.
