Description: It wouldn't be a trip to Switzerland without a stop at the fabled Matterhorn and the lovely town of Zermatt that sits at its base.
Without a doubt, Zermatt lives and thrives off of tourism. In fact, without the Matterhorn casting its shadow on the town, Zermatt would be just another seasonal ski town...though a pretty nice one, nonetheless.
The charming thing about Zermatt is that cars are not allowed anywhere in the city. This is to prevent air pollution from ruining the views. Visitors need to park their vehicles outside of the city, and then take the train or busses in.
Its easy to spot the Matterhorn from most places in Zermatt. It stands majestically tall and ski lifts can take you to the summit of the Klein Matterhorn. This is the peak opposite the Matterhorn which boasts the highest ski lift in Europe at 12533 feet (3820 meters).
Even if you are not a skier or snowboarder, Zermatt is still a wonderful place to visit. The prices in the winter season are high. A bed in a backpackers inn cost me $100 Swiss francs for a night, but it was definitely worth a trip. I highly recommend it.
