Byron Bay Lighthouse

The large white lighthouse can be seen on top of the cape for miles and is worth a visit. Not just because the lighthouse was built in 1901 and is still one of the most powerful lighthouses in the southern hemisphere, but because the view is incredible. On the road up to the lighthouse there is a great view down the coast over Tallow Beach. You can take the pretty walk through the woodland to the lighthouse - it's quite steep in places so be prepared. Once at the lighthouse there are some basic amenities, toilets, shop etc. Then there is the walk behind the lighthouse down to the sea - passing the most easterly point of Australia, it's easy to miss if you're not paying attention but there is a large compass on the ground near the spot. Look out for dolphins and depending on the season, humpback whales. You also stand a good chance of seeing wallabies and a host of bird life.

There were no lifeguards at this beach, so swim at your own risk. The water was cold, but we got used to it after a few minutes. We loved how crystal clear it was, and we could see small fish swimming by us. The waves were not huge, but there were people out surfing and kayaking. There were many people out getting a tan, too.

At night, many people gathered around the pier to smoke, drink and just relax. During the day, men were fishing off the pier. The coastline is extremely long, so it's easy to find a secluded spot. We could also smell marijuana in the air at night and saw several romantic couples enjoying a beach walk hand in hand. I'd recommend waiting until late October for a comfortable swimming temperature, if you can.

Cape Byron Lighthouse

I have always loved lighthouses, so a visit to this one was atop my list of to-dos for Byron Bay. This is one of the most spectacular ones I have ever seen. The lighthouse has several boardwalks leading through meandering paths lined with vegetation down a very steep hill to various parts of the beach. We were delighted to see some black and white mountain goats grazing in the shade on the side of the hill the Lighthouse is situated on. The water was crystal clear even from the top of the hill.

One of the many information cards posted near the lighthouse stated that humpbacked whales regularly migrate in August back to Antarctica. We waited for about twenty minutes but didn't see any. I guess we just missed the season for that. Dolphins also inhabit the ocean near the lighthouse, and we saw a few frolicking.

The lighthouse is the easternmost point on mainland Australia. At night we saw the full moon lighting up the ocean and many, many stars. There were only a few dozen people around when we visited (on a Thursday), so we were able to explore the paths without being impeded by tour groups.
