This place, although located in North Carolina, can be listed as North Georgia since it is less than a 30 minute drive from our central location of Dillard, GA. We drive from our home in Milledgeville, or stay overnight and relax during the following day.
As soon as we arrive at Gem City we purchase a bucket of soil from the cashier. Then, we pour some of the soil into the screens, rinse it in the water flume, and search for stones. Finding the stones is the main purpose of the activity, but my wife swears that plunging her hands into the cold water and separating the soil and the stones is both relaxing and capable of removing her headaches.
For me, the enjoyment includes taking the stones that were found and having them evaluated by the gemologists. We highly recommend that you speak to Tamara. She is always helpful. We have had more than 100 stones cut for jewelry that we have found. I have two rings, and my wife has 6 bracelets, 2 rings, 4 pendants, and numerous sets of earrings that were made from the stones that we found.
Gem City also has pans of gold that one can sort through and a gift shop. Further, many children and teenagers enjoy riding the chairlift to the top of the mountain.
We will continue to return here as long as we are physically able to do so. We have tried mining from more than 10 other locations within 50 miles of this area, but have found that the best stones, best service, and the most value for the money spent comes from Gold City.
