Beach at the Mayan Palace Puerto Penasco

The beach at the Mayan Palace is the most unusual beach I have ever been on. When the tide is high, the water line is up fairly close to the resort. Then, when the tide is the lowest, it is almost a 1/4-mile walk straight out from the resort's pool area to get to the water! Even at high tide, you can walk hundreds of feet out into the sea. On really windy days, the waves are somewhat rougher than usual, but otherwise, the water is very calm, with few waves.

The color of the water is blue-green but not turquoise. As the tide goes out, ripples are left in the sand. Also, small pools of water are left in places. These are good spots to find large shells. Oh, those shells. I have never been a "sheller", but I became one on this beach. You don't have to search for shells--they are just there. I do not know the types you will find, but they are certainly varied.

As you walk up the beach (toward Puerto Penasco), you will see several vacation homes, some still under construction. There are many more shells in this area than directly in front of the Mayan Palace.

This beach is great for morning strolls, evening strolls, or just strolls anytime of the day! It is also great for families with children.

There were miles and miles of beautiful sand beaches, tidal pools, shells, and beach cabanas with loungers. Soccer, volleyball, and table tennis was played on the beach. There were night campfires.

The beach is so expansive from the steps of the resort to the water that we finally had to count the steps it takes to get there or no one would believe us! When the tide comes in, the walk is much, much shorter, and then, when it goes out again...get those sand pails ready for shelling! We collected so many beautiful seashells in wonderful colors and shapes that we all got to choose and share in the bounty, with everyone ending up with more than you could imagine! There is not much sea life to see for snorkeling enthusiasts, but in town, there is a dive company to take you to more populated areas.

The resort-sponsored activities were terrible.
-They did not start at 9am, as listed on the resort schedule.
-Water aerobics was a joke.
-While the resort claimed to be 94% occupied, very few people participated in most activities. (We saw no more than 25 people at the pool at any given time.)

We thought the beach was great. Because the resort is remote, the beach was pristine. The ocean tide was amazing. There is about a 1/4 mile difference between high tide and low tide. In the morning, the ocean is way out and as the day goes on the water comes to you and then goes back out by the evening. It was amazing how quickly it changes. As an added bonus, we saw dolphins swimming almost every day along the shore.

There is an undertow so this is not a beach to let young ones just float around in the ocean unsupervised. You might think it is because of how shallow it seems. We did see one "rescue" of a teenager who went too far out in the ocean and could not get back in. He was fine in the end but it was very scary, so stay close to your kids and even the "big kids" who might have had too much to drink.

Remember this is Mexico and they don't have the same type of equipment to do rescues as the US. In this case, a plastic canoe and shovel. There are no life guards so you have to but responsible for knowing where you family is at all times. If you get in trouble, there are some wonderful hotel staff who were willing to jump in and swim to the person in need, but it's best just not to ever need them.
