Ft. Frederica is a national parksite of a outpost for England during the Spanish American war. It has ruins, cannons, and a lovely park-like setting among trees hanging with Spanish moss and atmosphere. There is a wonderful visitor center with facilities which offers a movie, artifacts, and many interesting exhibits for all ages. It is very inexpensive since it is a national park -- $4 per car and you could easily spend several hours there. Kids love it as well as anyone who loves history.

Founded in 1736, there is little left of the 1000 resident town that once housed a regiment of British regulars. The layout of the original houses of the settlement is there for all to see. The town bore a very close resemblance to a typical English village of the times. There is not much left of the original fortifications, but the park is well worth the trip. I have never seen a better choice for a site to form a defensive position that would be suitable to block the Spanish from coming north from Florida to threaten the city of Savannah. The green grass and beautiful oak trees are as pristine today as they must have been before the first European set foot on Georgia soil. There is a very adequate museum/gift shop that provides easily understood information about this important, early, and largely forgotten fort. Two of the early clergymen that served here were John and Charles Wesley. General Oglethorpe, the founder of the colony of Georgia, owned a nearby plantation. The site is so well protected from current civilization that one can easily transport himself back into time--a time when European nations fought to gain a fabulous empire in the New World! I hope you will take your family to this site.

Here you will find the remains of a fortified settlement dating back to 1736. It was established by Gen. James Oglethorpe, the founder of GA. The ruins include a fort, barracks, a moat and a few houses. The views are great.
