The Third Street Promenade is a closed-off street full of shops, restaurants, bars, discos, and local vendors. They often have farmers' markets on side streets on the weekends.

Third Street Promenade

3 or 4 blocks of Third Street are blocked to vehicle traffic and people mill around this wonderful area. There are many small boutiques, kiosks and even some larger stores like Tommy Hilfiger and Gap. 3 movie theaters in walking distance of each other allow you to pick which of the current movies you want to see. Movie prices here are less than in Hollywood: $8.50 for adults and $5.50 for kids. There are many restaurants & cafes to choose from--I would say at least 40! There are street performers in many places throughout the area. Several bands and individual singers, dancers, even psychic cats to give you a reading for $2.00 My biggest regret is we didn't actually get a reading and a photo of these cats dressed up in satin! There are also a number of homeless people occupying the benches. Sometimes you can smell them before you see them. We saw the same homeless man eating leftovers from several garbage cans. Despite that small blot on this street, we really enjoyed our time on the Promenade. A large mall is just across Broadway if you want more traditional shopping, but definitely take the time to enjoy the festival-like atmosphere on the Promenade!

3rd Street Promenade

The three blocks of 3rd Street that strech from Wilshire until it dead-ends at the Santa Monica mall, is closed to cars and is full of pedistrians, street performers and booths with colorful goods. While I lived in Los Angeles, this was one of my favorite weekend spots. It's a huge toursit attraction so you'll hear several languages spoken as you stroll down the street. There aren't many places where one walks in LA, so it's nice to be outside and stroll around leisurally. Some of my favorite stores can be found on this strech such as Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie and a few local boutiques. There are several movie theatres along this street as well.
