Mountain Biking at Snow Summit

The "Scenic Sky Chair" opens on May 8, weekends only, weather and conditions permitting. The ski lift opens daily from June 12 through September 5, is open on weekends only beginning September 4, and closes once ski season opens. For novice riders, the Bristlecone Trail, east of the base area, and Towne Trail (my favorite!!) to the west offer gentle, rolling terrain that is a perfect introduction to mountain biking. Intermediates will find slightly more challenging terrain at the top of the Scenic Sky Chair, including Skyline Drive, which rolls across the top of the ridge with great views of Big Bear Lake. A short, steep, single-track climb takes you to Grandview Point, which is a great spot to take a break and is the starting point of a thrilling downhill ride to Towne Trail and back to Snow Summit. It's a nine-mile loop and one of the most popular rides in the area. Those who are looking for more time in the saddle can stay on Skyline Drive all the way to the Champion Lodgepole Pine and then loop back to the resort, making an epic 16-miler.

** NEW! ** Big Bear Queen

Lagonita Lodge runs pontoon boat tours at low prices a couple times a week. The day we had planned to go, the boat tours were canceled due to the threat of lightning and thunderstorms. So the next day, we went down to the nearby Big Bear Marina and took a lake tour on the ersatz paddle boat, the Big Bear Queen. They run tours several times during the day, depending on the number of folks signed up, and only guarantee a 2pm sailing, which is the one we went on. Prices are a very reasonable: $12 for adults, $10 for kids 3-12, free for under 3.

The 90 minute narrated tour takes you around the entire circumference of the lake. Our guide provided us with a mixture of historical lore, celebrity home info, bird watching, advertising of local restaurants and lodging, and humor. Even though we had been on a boat tour the previous summer, it was still fun to get out on the water and see the sights.

Don't forget to bring a jacket, even in the middle of summer. It can get pretty windy on the upper deck, especially when the boat gets to the end of the lake closer to the dam.

The Big Bear Marina also offers boat rentals at what seem to me to be fairly steep prices, although they are comparable to all the other marinas in the area. It's beyond me how you can rent a $25,000 car for 29 bucks a day, but a 14 ft aluminum boat with an 8 hp outboard costs $45 for 2 hours!

Snow Summit to Party

Snow Summit to Party

This is where you would go to be seen. Most of the young twenty-something snowboard events are staged here and the many patios, bars and eating areas accommodate this plus the place is huge.

Skiers seem to have their own part of the mountain, so skiing hasn't yet been phased out completely. It differs on the bar patios where the older guy skiers, who are used to cruising the place, are figuring out that "ski bunnies" no longer exist. All the young girls now snowboard.

These old guys stick out like dinosaurs in their ski clothes which differ greatly from the snowboarding outfits of the young hotties. They, very obviously, look old and dated. Suddenly, their ski persona is working against them in a way they never could have imagined.

Watching the realization hit is kinda sad. But then, with some of them, that glint comes back into their eye and you can see the wheels turning as they observe and plot their next move to blend into the scene again.

Anyway, sure enough, there were lots of these older guys in my snowboarding class over at Bear Mountain. So, I guess, the thing to do, dino or not, is to get past falling down all over the place at Bear Mountain and then come back to Snow Summit to hang out as a too hip shredder.
