Description: It is one of the most photographed locations in NZ – the snow-capped mountains perfectly reflected in a scenic blue lake framed by rainforests. It was overcast that morning at Fox glacier, and we didn’t expect Lake Matheson, about 3 miles from the township, to be any better. We had about 4 hours before our half-day glacier hike at Franz Joseph, and decided to make the walk.
Winding through thick forest vegetation, the 1.5-hour loop trail is very easy for all ages and fitness levels. I think I fell in love with the ferns during this walk. Different types of ferns in different shades of green grow in abundance and added to the beauty of the pristine lake. I had this incredible urge to pick each variety of ferns for a dried flower (or fern) book. We could see glimpses of the lake amidst clearing in the walk. There were also viewing platforms for photographs from various angles. We stopped at almost every viewing deck to wonder at the marvel of the rainforests around us.
When we reached the viewing deck at Reflection Island, we were only slightly disappointed at not being able to see the famed reflections of Mt. Cook and Mt. Tasman. We could see the reflections of the forest that framed the lake. While we were at the reflection island deck, it started drizzling. The ripples that the raindrops created made the lake appear like a kaleidoscope, giving it a very surreal effect with the forest reflections.
Finishing the trail, we stopped for a coffee at the café with a million-dollar view (in clear weather) at the start of the trail. Though I wish we had been able to see that reflection, the walk was something I would not have missed, even if there had been no reflection that we were seeking. Of course, I don't think I would ever get tired of walking among rainforests - I've fallen so much in love with them. But for someone who has been walking all over New Zealand, then perhaps the walk without the views would seem just another walk.
