Description: Established in 1940 by the Germans, Auschwitz and Birkenau are widely known as the site of some of the most horrific crimes perpetrated against humanity, and today are home to a stirring monument and museum to remind visitors, and the world at large, of the legacy of Nazi devastation and wholesale murder. Founded in 1947, the museum occupies 191 hectares, 20 in Camp Auschwitz, and 171 in Auschwitz II-Birkenau. More than 25 million people have entered these grounds since 1979, the vast majority passing under the grim iron “Arbeit Macht Frei” (Work Makes Freedom) arch, through which millions of Jews passed on their way into the camp.
