Vintgar Gorge

Only a short drive/taxi from Bled town, this was one of the highlights of my trip. Walk in the refreshing spray of a river whilst walking in beautiful surroundings. It's amazing that they've managed to build a path through this gorge, you wouldn't think there's space.

The walk itself is quite easy, maybe 2 hours long, quite flat. There is a cafe at either end. An optional walk back to town takes an extra hour, but is harder as it has hills and very little shade.

The cost is about 2€ and is well worth it. You won't be able to stop taking photos as there are so many great views

This gorge is a short distance from Bled and accessible either on foot, by local bus or in the summer months by tourist bus. We took the tourist bus, which is just 200 SIT each way. It's a nice run from outside the Grand Hotel Toplice as the bus runs around the lake and then up to the castle before going to the Gorge. Entrance to the gorge is about 500 SIT each.

The gorge itself is a wooden walkway that is built into the rock of the gorge and built rather amazingly in 1893. It's 1600m long and follows the Radovna River. The walkway crisscrosses the river several times giving great views of the falls and rapids. The walkway can get wet and slippery so good shoes are required. At each end of the walkway is a small snack bar and some picnic tables.

This is a superb place, if not for the rapids (which in summer aren't so spectacular), then for the walkway, which is pretty impressive.

Miraculously, the 1600m of woodwork that follows the gorge was built in 1893. It's still mostly the original wood and work -- but you can see the patches where they have replaced many planks along the way. Looking down into the Gorge, gives you a sense of coolness as the water looks purely green. You can watch fresh water trout swimming by under your feet and may alos enounter bears along the way -- don't be alarmed as they are mainly fishing in the river and could care less of passers-by. Just make sure you make a lot of noise -- they are more likely to ignore you if they know you exist! The waterfall along the gorge is called Sum and the walk only costs 400 SIT.
