Bled Island

Bled Island stands in the lake and looks stunning and enticing from the shore. There are several ways to get here. Firstly you could rent a rowing boat and row here but you need to be fit as it's a lot further than it looks. Secondly you could swim--now you really need to be fit for this option and you can't go in the church once here unless you manage to bring some clothes with you. So really the only sensible option is to pay a small fortune to the pletna (flat gondola) and be taken there. It cost 1800 SIT for the ride to the island and back, but it has to be done.

Once on the island you have 30 minutes before the pletna leaves again, and this gives you just enough time to visit the Church of the Assumption, a pretty place inside and out. Then there is the Chaplain and Provost houses and the wishing bell. You make a wish and ring the bell which bascially everyone does. Then you just have time to buy an icecream or trinket, back around the island on the tiny path around the edge and back onto your pletna.

A visit to the island isn't essential, but it is fun.

Island on Lake Bled

The island offers a unique view of Lake Bled and the village, but the goal of a jaunt to the island is to visit the little chapel to ring the Bell of Wishes. A rope comes through the vaulted ceiling of the small chapel and hangs in the choir. It requires pulling with all your weight in order to get it to ring. Ornate figures on the Baroque-style altar and a solitary wood carving of the Virgin and Child from the 15th century on the left side of the chapel will be your only witnesses in March, as there were no tourists. A cutaway section of the floor reveals the foundation of the original pre-Roman structure.

Bled Island

Description: Bled Island sits in the middle of Lake Bled. It's a very picturesque tree-covered island with, in the middle, a little church: the Church of St Mary (Sv. Marija). In the church you can see a small archeological display about the island. There's also a wishing bell that visitors are encourage to toll.
Getting there: there are two ways: from Bled town local people can row visitors there and back, on a flat boat, for about 1000 SIT (about 5$). The crossing takes about 30 minutes. All around the lake you can also rent kayaks and row yourself there.
