Drottingholm

Drottingholm is a 50 minute boat rid efrom the Stadhusburon in central Stockholm. The round trip cost is about $7 US. This summer palace was originally built for Queen Hedwig Eleonora. Tours in English ($4 US) were only available on Sundays, so be sure to check before visiting. Though beautiful to look at without a guide, a guide will explain the history and intricacies of the palace including some of its Rococo decoration. Outside the palce is a beautiful garden, and small cafe. Many people brought picnics and I saw many families together. If you follow some of the paths around the garden you find the Chinese Pavilion. One of the kings liked Chinese architecture and incorporated it into the garden. You'll also find the Court Theatre from the 1700's with working wind and thunder machines and trap doors.
