Formerly home to a large market, Grote Markt still functions as the old city's central hub. The Markt is popular for its peoplewatching and occasional flower market, while locals and tourists alike flock to the cafes and restaurants that line its borders. Highlights of the square include the 12th century Belfry of Bruges, which stands 270 feet over the Markt, and the central statues commemorating the heroes of the 1302 uprising against the French. Visitors are welcome to climb the 366 stairs to the top of the Belfry, or simply nosh on some frites and a Belgian brew and watch the world go by.
