Description: The Basilica of the Holy Blood, a small, grey yet ornate church located in a back corner of Burg Square, holds large secrets. What's here? A relic of cloth allegedly containing the blood of Jesus, and for the faithful, that's a big deal. A small tube tightly holds the cloth and is visible to anyone who enters. The Basilica itself consists of a Romanesque lower chapel and Gothic upper chapel. The Romanesque portion is austere with very little decoration, while the Gothic upper level is alive with color and detail. The two chapels are connected by a monumental brick staircase, originally built in 1533. The staircase was demolished during the French occupation, and then rebuilt in the 19th century.
