Night Watchman's Tour

Each evening (April-Dec.) at 8pm, the Night Watchman appears in Market Square with his lighted lamp, ready to take visitors on a 1-hour tour of Rothenburg in English. As the group winds its way through the cobblestone streets of the medieval town, he tells of medieval life in Rothenburg in a humorous way. He is willing to pose for pictures. He also sells videos and other souvenirs. Payment of EUR 5 is on the honor system at the end of the walk. No reservations needed; just join the group waiting in Market Square.

Beginning to end, it was facinating. Very interesting to hear the history of the city and about medieval life. The tour guide offered a lot of personality and character to the tour. Highly recommended!

Rothenburg can be a tourist trap during the day, but in the evenings, after the tour buses have departed, it takes on the feel of the medieval town it is. The Night Watchman, Hans Georg Baumgartner, guides those on tour around the town describing how it was to live in medieval times and the difficulties they had. One truly grasps an understanding of why this town was so well maintained for so many years (it was actually due to poverty -- they couldn't afford to upgrade).
Guided one-hour English language tours are available from April until December.

The Night Watchman of Rothenburg played an important role in the past times, he was responsible for the safety of the town. He carried a hellebarde, and held a light in the other hand. He appeared at night, this started the walking tour.

We joined this tour on mt 23rd birthday, a special day with a special event. The Night Watchman looked very smart, he was in black and many people liked taking pictures with him. Don't talk too loudly when he talked, because he would look very unhappy (or angry). Following him, we walked around this small city, and he talked much about the history of Rothenburg. Like... how rich this city was, and in the second world war, how this city was saved by an American general.

You would need to pay after the tour, many people just left before the very end of it. And of course, we did pay! = )

The Walk of the Night Watchman

The Night Watchman’s walking tour is probably the "in" thing (well, actually the only form of nightlife!) for tourists to do during the evening. Hans Georg Baumgartner, the Night Watchman, leads one-hour English tours daily from Easter to Christmas beginning at 8 p.m. and guided tours in German at 9:15. Meet at the Market Square in front of the town hall.

Dressed in black and carrying a lantern, the Night Watchman comes to the Market Square promptly at 8:00. Before beginning his tour, he lets people watch the Glockenspiel go off at 8. The show is less than thrilling-- two windows on the Glockenspiel open and two figures come out.

I highly recommend taking the Night Watchman’s tour. Baumgartner takes you around Rothenburg and provides you with an overview of the town's history in an interesting and humorous manner. You won’t be disappointed!
