Castle of St Jorge

It consists of the former citadel of Alcazar, twelve gateways (seven of which lead to the parish of Santa Cruz do Castelo), the battlements and wall of Barbeca (Barbican) and eighteen towers (eleven of which belong to the fortress, and one, Torre de Sao Lourenco, is linked to the battlements by a long stairway). If we go though Portao Sul (the south gate) which leads to Rua de Santa Cruz do Costelo, we enter the old Praca de Armas. The building was severely damaged by the 1755 earthquake. In 1910 the building was declared a National Monument and restoration work began.

Castelo Sao Jorge

Castelo de Sao Jorge is named in honour of dragon-killing St. George, Portugal's Patron Saint. Views of the Baixa and Alfama are fabulous. After seeing the Castle, visit Se Patriarchal Cathedral and walk through the Alfama, the oldest part of Lisbon.

This site has hosted a castle for the last 1500 years, although the current ruins date back from different periods, as the structure has been rebuilt, renovated, and restored, not to mention sacked, destroyed, and attacked repeatedly over this time! There is an amazingly good view over Lisbon from the vast and imposing walls around the compound, and you have to climb up here and have a look. It'll also help you get to grips with Lisbon's layout, and orientate yourself in an often confusing city.

The castle is interesting, and is well worth a visit, especially for the views. But we did find it very commercial, with vendors doing their utmost to flog you postcards, pens, drinks, and ice-cream at every possible opportunity. It did all get a little tiring after a while.
