Description: Gayhead Beach, otherwise known as Aquinnah Beach (the two names seem interchangeable, even from one road sign to the next!) is really spectacular, if a bit of a haul to get to. I'd been to Martha's Vineyard four or five times before, but never made it out to this beach, which was a mistake. It's worth it. There aren't many amenities to speak of (where we were there were just two porto-johns) but that is precisely the charm. No boats, no bars or restaraunts, no jet-skis, just the beautiful calm water and the incredible cliffs for which this beach is famous.
The clay cliffs change from blood red and burnt orange to chalky white as you walk down the shore, and the beach becomes rockier and more raw as you go as well. Gayhead is just the perfect place to go for a long, relaxing day at the beach with pretty much nothing else to do very nearby.
Make sure to bring a day's worth of supplies down to the water with you, including food and entertainment, as once you're there you won't feel like hiking back up the 15-minute footpath to the parking lot!
