Snorkeling

When visiting A Motu, there is some of the best snorkeling in Moorea. You do not need to take an expensive snorkeling trip. Just take the water taxi from the Beachcomber Resort. The cost is about $10 roundtrip. Most resorts you stay at supply you with free snorkeling gear. Make sure you take it. This is a great place to see stingrays. One came so close to us that we were able to touch it.

It was a once in a lifetime experience. I let the sting rays rub right up against my legs - they were like cats only they were looking for a whole fish as the captain of our snorkeling boat had fed them sardines. The barbecue lunch was complimented by a rum fruit punch and a coconut cracking demonstration and a couple of chosen volunteers. We had a chance to sample both the meat and the coconut milk (water) too.

The captain said the rays live to be about 35 or 36-years-old when I asked him their life span.

We snorkeled in several great places - the protection and size of the reef are so extensive that nearly any beach will do. Our favorite spots were near the Bali Hai hotel (calm water and a myriad of somewhat tame fish) and near the motus (small islands) on the northwest shore of the island (very shallow water perfect for observing smaller sealife and the fish aren't hand fed). Equipment rental is available in many spots, including the hotels.
