Local Artist

We were driving towards Arambol beach when we noticed a house on the side of the road with masks hanging from the walls. Driven from curiosity and the beautiful masks we decided to go in and have a look. A little girl welcomed us as she was calling her mum. We got into the house, which was a small gallery covered with masks of Lord Ganesh and other Hindu deities.

We picked a couple of masks and as we were ready to go, the artist Mr Vishwanath K. Shetgaonkar came in and he offered to show us all his work, from embossing on silver, brass, copper, and papier machie items. He also offered us tea and biscuits as he explained his work, his exhibition in Panjim, and all around India, and that he is an awarded artist.

I think visiting his house was one of the most original moments during my time in Goa--I just wish we could take more masks. It's worth visiting!
