Description: Locate near Cork and the River Mountain, the medieval Blarney Castle is home to the famous Blarney Stone, making it another wildly popular tourist destination in Ireland. Built in 1446 by the MacCarthy of Muskerry, the castle is now a partial ruin, with some rooms and battlements still accessible to visitors. At the top of the castle you’ll find the Blarney Stone, also known as the Stone of Eloquence. It’s believed that kissing the Blarney Stone – which requires prospective smoochers to hang upside down over a sheer drop – will grant the kisser the gift of eloquence. After you’ve kissed the rock, peruse the paths through the gardens that surround the castle, and check out natural rock formations like Druid’s Circle, Witch’s Cave and the Wishing Steps. Or pay a visit to the Scottish baronial-style mansion known as the Blarney House, built on the castle grounds in 1874.
