Kissing the Blarney Stone

Legend has it that anyone who kisses the Blarney stone will be granted the "gift of the gab" - meaning they will never be lost for words. I don't know the history behind it, but it could be something to do with the garrulous nature of Cork folk.

The town is beautiful and the castle is a fantastic display of ancient architecture. I love old castles and this town provided more to enjoy.

The line to kiss the stone is long at popular times of the year (spring/summer) but I think it's a must to do at least once if you are in Ireland. It's a great seen with people waiting patiently on line and everyone having a fun time with it.

Blarney Castle

Blarney Castle was built nearly six hundred years ago by one of Ireland’s greatest chieftains, Cormac MacCarthy. The Blarney Castle

The Blarney Castle is a must-see attraction. Even though you need to hang upside-down in order to kiss the Blarney Stone, it's still fun to watch family and friends kiss a stone that millions of people have kissed.

We took a bus from Dublin because we're cheap. It was a long, long, long ride. Get there some other way, but go. The castle and the grounds are amazing, although the climb to the top of the castle is a little scary, seeing as how the stairs barely qualify as stairs. If you can, check out the surrounding town while you're there. Have a light lunch and check out the shops. The people are just as friendly as they are in Dublin. If you get to Blarney via Cork, spend some time there as well. We had a great dinner at a place recommended by a lady in a shop and walked around Cork for a while.

A very nice place to visit, Blarney's Castle was built in the 1200; it is said that Blarney saved an old woman from drowning, and in exchange, she gave him a stone with a spell that he placed in his castle--this stone would give the gift of eloquence to anyone who would kiss it, and funny, you have to do it upside down! Yes, I kissed the Blarney Stone, it would have been very silly to travel that far and not do it. A small spot, but we had a lot of fun--Blarney village is also a pretty little town, and you can do some shopping for Irish stuff.
