The ski school in Toas, New Mexico, is unbelievable. They spent a lot of time making sure everyone was comfortable, and it wasn't so busy that you had to worry about running into others. The only bad thing was New Mexico had a pretty warm winter, so all the snow there was machine made.

Taos Ski Area

I skied the Taos ski are one afternoon during our winter road trip. This area was different from most of the areas I have skied. The day I visited was just after a huge snow storm in January, but the area still seemed to be icy. I don’t know if they groomed too much or if the sun just hits the mountain wrong or what.

Taos gets an average of 305 inches of snow a year and 300-plus days of sun. They have 110 trails with 24% beginner, 25% intermediate, and 51% expert. They only have 12 lifts, with 4 quads, 1 triple, 5 double, and 2 surface. The base elevation is 9,207 feet and the summit elevation is 11,819 feet. They are open daily from 9am until 4pm.

The ski area is located a ways out of the town, but there are some condos, restaurants, and shops in the ski area. This was one of the smallest ski areas I have visited. It was an okay place, but I still prefer other ski areas. I probably will not visit this ski area again, but I’m glad I did go once.

Taos Ski Valley

First of all, the bad stuff: The base is at elevation 9,000 ft so it may be a problem for those with altitude sickness. Some of the best terrain is not served by lifts. Walking uphill in ski boots for an hour is not my idea of a vacation. That said, the lift served ski area is still fantastic. What sets this area apart is the ski school. I hadn't been in ski school for 25 years but at Taos I gave it a try. Why? Because everone else was doing it (Don't tell my kids I said that!!) The instructors are often the owners of the restaurants, hotel and lodges in the resort. Ski school director Jean Meyer has a fabulous hotel and restaurant that is slopeside (the St. Barnard.) You spend the entire week with a class of 5 or 6 students and one instructor. During the week you test your skills on the NASTAR course and generally explore the entire mountain. Your instructor will show you where the martini trees are. In several places on the mountain, management has placed glass flasks filled with very dry martinis. The flow rate is slow from the flask but the booze is good!!
