It's Mardi Gras all the time at Mardi Gras world

So you missed Mardi Gras? Don’t worry, because you can get an amazing backroom look at some of the festival at Blaine Kern’s Mardi Gras World. Take the free ferry at the end of Canal Street across to Algiers. For $17.50, you get a tour and a chance to peruse the artistry of Mardi Gras in this industrial-size workshop and repository of many oversized characters that make Carnival in New Orleans the world-class event that it is. Want to get a picture of yourself dressed up? There’s a room filled with costumes for you to suit up and a gift shop that handily outdoes the tacky souvenir shops you’ll find elsewhere. Mardi Gras World goes on your "A" list.

When we got to Mardi Gras World, they gave you a string of Mardi Gras beads with the jester on it. They then took you into a room with costumes, headdresses, and heads of celebrities and let you dress up and take pictures so you could see what it felt like for the people in the parades. After that, we began the tour; we went through rooms with props used on the floats, and in one room we saw someone putting a papermache layer on the Wicked Witch of the West. We saw another person working on making the fancy trim for the floats; we then continued on into the Big Room, which was being set up for a party that evening. In the room, there are three floats that are used every year by one of the krewes; the first was a mermaid with fiber optics, the next was a sea serpent with fiber optics, and the last one was the steam-paddle wheel boat in three sections, also fiber optics.

From there, we went into another section where they were working on the 2006 floats for Allah; several of the floats were there, and some were getting minor makeovers, while others were complete. There are 14 more buildings with floats and props stored in them. It was interesting and fun. The tour gives you a better understanding of Mardi Gras, what it is all about, and the size of the floats (huge). We also learned from the tour guide that the parades do not go down through the actual streets of the French Quarter but rather go around the boundaries of the French Quarters. The streets in the French Quarters are too narrow for these floats.

If you are unable to attend Mardi Gras or just want to see what happens behind the scenes, Blaine Kerns Mardi Gras Museum will give you a good introduction to the world of Mardi Gras. To start, you will watch a 15- to 20-minute movie about the history of Mardi Gras. After the movie, you are directed around the museum while you sample some king cake and beverages. After the tour, you are free to walk around and see more amazing floats and props of all sizes. You will also get to see artists, painters, and sculptors at work, building floats for next year. To get here, you take a free ferry.

A great way to spend a couple of hours! Take the free Canal Street ferry in the French Quarter to Historic Old Algiers, then hop the shuttle bus to the museum.

Browse the shop until your group is ushered into the costume room, then have fun trying on costumes and masks. This is a great photo opportunity. A short movie about how the floats are made is then shown.

Continue on to the float storage area where you will be given coffee and King Cake. The person who finds the doll in their piece of cake wins a free prize!

Then you are guided through the warehouse to view the floats. Wander through after the tour to take photos, then catch the shuttle van back to the dock.
