Nice Mission in a City Setting

Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is one of the more interesting Missions we have visited. Most of the Missions are in a more neighborhood or rural setting, this one feels very vibrant and alive, like we are in a big city.

Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was built in the 1790's and is the fifth mission built in California. Restoration back to the original setting began in 1933. Outside of the Mission is Mission Plaza which hosts various social and community events.

The Mission church has lovely painted decorations with a high ceiling, it is very narrow. The gardens are nice. The Mission church is still active and Mass is said twice daily, with 3 additional services on Sundays.

Mission San Luis Obispo De Tolosa

This is one of the more beautiful missions in California. It is settled right on the outskirts of downtown and is surrounded by a beautiful lawn scattered with trees and landscaping. It is the perfect place to settle down with a blanket and a picnic lunch on a warm day.

The mission still serves as a church today, but you can still go in and check it out. There are helpful people to help out and answer any questions, and there are clean public bathrooms.

Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa

Phone number is 805-781-8220 The Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was one of the high points of our visit to San Luis Obisbo. The mission was founded in 1772 by Father Junipero Serra, and it is still used to hold regular services.

The Mission was very beautiful. We loved the delicate handpainted ceilings, and old wooden beams and stained glass. More notable was the feeling of solitude and inner peace I felt during our visit....and it wasn't even during a service! It was very humbling to be in such a sacred and old place....I really enjoyed it.

The Mission has a wonderful courtyard in the back, with very nice gardens, with historic fountains and statues. There were great views of the back of the Mission from the courtyard. There was also a large open covered grill area for cookouts.

The grounds in front of the Mission are very nice as well. The Mission is situated near San Luis Obisbo creek on Mission Plaza. In the front there are nice gardens overlooking Mission Plaza and the creek. There are flowers and rocks around a statue and cross.

In the front of the Mission there is a large gift shop, that has wonderful souvenirs, including rosaries, cards, and other inspirational gifts.

Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is in the heart of downtown San Luis Obisbo, at the corner of Monterey and Chorro Streets. To get there, go to San Luis Obisbo, and take Monterrey Street south into downtown until it dead ends into Chorro Street. You will see the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa on the right....you can't miss it. I recommend using the free downtown shuttle to get anywhere downtown.

This mission was the beginning of the town of San Luis Obispo and was built around 1770. It was named afer a French Bishop who lived in the 13th century. Its roof was built with tile rather than the more common thatch to keep the native american attacks with flamming arrows from burning the mission. It now serves as a parish church. It has a beautiful garden. It contains a museum with artifacts of the Chumash Indians and the early settlers of the area. It is now open to the public and is a beautiful mission. It is sometimes referred to as the "Prince of Missions". There is no charge but they accept donations.

Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was founded in 1772. Today it still serves a purpose as a church. Part of the mission houses a small museum displaying artifacts from the San Luis Obispo culture. A small gift shop is also located inside.
