Glockenspiel

Glockenspiel

At 11am, 12pm, and 5pm, you can watch the wooden figures dance around on the New Town Hall. My husband's reaction was "Is that it?" It's one of those things you really should see in Munich, but you'll feel as though you could have easily gone without once it's over. More amusing is watching the other tourists gather, and then seeing all the necks craned and cameras pointed in unison.

Marienplatz is a nice place to spend time anyway--plenty of shops, restaurants, architecture to look at--so you may as well plan to be there while the music's going!

Glockenspiel

All the tour books I read and people I spoke with said to make sure to see the Glockenspiel at Marienplatz. It "performs" each day at 10:30am, noon, and 5pm. We had a quick breakfast and saw the Glockenspiel at 10:30 a.m. I was not impressed. It is neat that the glockenspiel was created hundreds of years ago and it still working. When the Glockenspiel turn on, you see a miniature tournament of knights jousting. I thought it was over-hyped. People were standing all around Marienplatz to see the performance of the Glockenspiel and we were surrounded by tour groups. The area is a great place to shop and hang out so if you hear it going off and are in the area, then look up and check it out. I don’t suggest scheduling your day around it. Ideally, you will be able to sit outside in one of the sidewalk cafes lining the area and enjoy a snack while waiting.

Glockenspiel

At the neo-Gothic Neues Rathaus located on Marienplatz in Altstadt, the Glockenspiel chimes with a display of knights and dancing coopers (daily 11am, noon 5 and 9pm).

The Glockenspiel is a must-see in Munich. On the tower of the New Town Hall, the Glockenspiel comes to life each day at 11:00AM and noon. A huge crowd stands in the square and watches the figures on the tower dance around to music. The performance lasts about 15 minutes, and is well worth a stop. From there, you are near the major sights of the city, and can walk around and enjoy the atmosphere.
