We went in early May, just prior to peak beach season. The air temperature didn't allow for much sunning on the beach, but we did walk along the beach. The sand is a bit rougher than on some beaches. There were lots of lovely shops and restaurants on the main beach drive. While walking along the beach, I noticed many motels across the street. I really think that in Cape May, a B&B is the preferred type of accommodation.

You will need to buy a beach tag to go on the beach. It costs $4 a day, $11 a week, $8 for a three day pass or $17 for the season. The beach is kept clean and it's not far to walk to the ocean.
If you're into surfing you can surf on Colonial and Jefferson Beach.
