Tidal Pools north of Pigeon Point

Tidal Pools north of Pigeon Point

We were lucky enough to reach these tidal pools near low tide, and the wildlife we could see by climbing along the rocks. I'd been to areas known for the tidal pools, but had always come away disappointed, for various reasons. On this day, however, there were things to see everywhere we looked. The highlight for me were the starfish- in an hour or so I found over a dozen, of several different colors. There were also crabs, anemones, a couple sea slugs, and a wide variety of plant life. There were six of us, in our twenties and thirties, climbing over the rocks like we were kids. A fabulous way to spend an afternoon.

Unfortunately, in December 2001, a small portion of the lighthouse exterior fell off, and the structure itself is closed to tours until it can be evaluated for safety. However, the grounds around the site, as well as the youth hostel located there, remain open. There's not much to it though- there's a very nice overlook at the point, from which you can easily see harbor seals sunning themselves on the rocks below, but that's about it. We quickly moved on to the tidal pools a couple hundred yards north of the lighthouse.
