Located 4.5 miles northeast of Kathmandu, the town of Boudhanath is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the world for Tibetan Buddhists and Nepalis. The highlight of the town is its massive stupa -- a mound-like structure that contains Buddhist relics -- one of the largest in the world, which locals and pilgrims circle clockwise for hours, chanting mantras. You’ll also notice an abundance of monks and nuns in the area, owing to the 29 distinct monasteries and nunneries in the area. Souvenir-hunters will enjoy the distinctly Tibetan offerings in Boudhanath, with goodies like statues, prayer flags and incense available everywhere. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, grab a table at the Stupa View Restaurant or the Three Sisters for great views of the shrine, or just grab a coffee and people-watch at the nearby Saturday Cafe.
