As every guidebook you come across will tell you, author Victor Hugo coined the Grand Place as 'the most beautiful square in the world' . However, this title never really caught on because we are still quoting him today.
The 17th century guild houses of the square were built in the Italian Baroque style with a hint of Flemish influence. Yet, the city hall was built a bit earlier (in the 15th century) in the Gothic style of the time. The height and grandeur of the city hall tower seem to dominate the Grand Place.

It may be, in fact, the most beautiful square in all of Brussels, but the phrase 'in the world' is a little too daring. But then again, we are in different times, and if we can put our imaginations to the test, we may be able to picture this square a few centuries earlier... The central meeting and market place for everyone. What a social atmosphere!
We visited the sqaure in the pouring rain, with no chance to see the flower market or the light show , which are both highly recommended by guidebooks and other travelers.
Then venture a few blocks beyond the Town Hall on rue de l'Etruve to see another of Brussels' popular sites: the Mannekin Pis ...
