Grand'Place

The first time we came to Brussels, we miss our connecting train in Lille and did not arrive in Brussels until close to midnight. Tired and weary, we checked in to the Novotel Hotel near the Grand'Place then took a walk there trying to find an open restaurant. What a surprise we were in for. We walked right into what was for us the most beautiful square in Europe with intricate buildings lid up in the most breathtaking way.

We have seen been to most countries in Europe and back to Brussels many times but we still think that the Grand'Place is the most beautiful square with its majestic Town Hall dating back to the 15th century and the intricate Gothic Guild Houses. Come to the square and spend some time admiring all the details on the gilded facades of the houses.

There is a flower market in the square every morning and a bird market on Sunday morning. In the summer, there is a light show there at dusk where the different buildings are highlighted. Every other year, in the later part of August, a flower tapestry 110m long and 68 m wide covers the square.

Grand Place'

This is the main square in Brussels. There are lots of bars and restaurants in the square. We were there in October and it just got very cold so we couldn't sit outside, but there were table outside and it looked great to be able to just sit and watch people. Also you have to go there at night to see it lit up.

As every guidebook you come across will tell you, author Victor Hugo coined the Grand Place as 'the most beautiful square in the world' . However, this title never really caught on because we are still quoting him today.

The 17th century guild houses of the square were built in the Italian Baroque style with a hint of Flemish influence. Yet, the city hall was built a bit earlier (in the 15th century) in the Gothic style of the time. The height and grandeur of the city hall tower seem to dominate the Grand Place.

Although this Place is quite Grand , my opinion does not quite match that of Mr. Hugo's. It may be, in fact, the most beautiful square in all of Brussels, but the phrase 'in the world' is a little too daring. But then again, we are in different times, and if we can put our imaginations to the test, we may be able to picture this square a few centuries earlier... The central meeting and market place for everyone. What a social atmosphere!

We visited the sqaure in the pouring rain, with no chance to see the flower market or the light show , which are both highly recommended by guidebooks and other travelers.

Then venture a few blocks beyond the Town Hall on rue de l'Etruve to see another of Brussels' popular sites: the Mannekin Pis ...

What it is: the city's central square, the first thing you'll see listed in the guidebooks

What I think of it: here, my opinion differs from that of many others. Yes, it is pretty, in a picture-perfect kind of way. Yes, it is a must-see sight. Yes, all tourists flock there, and, chances are, you will, too. Keeping all that in mind, it's rather disappointing. The Town Hall is indeed remarkable, but the neo-Gothic 'La Maison du roi' (King's residence, facing the Town Hall ) feels, well, *fake*. After visiting it, I couldn't shake off the feeling that the whole city somehow lacked authenticity. My suggestion: go ahead and visit it, take all the pictures you want (bring a wide-angle lens), and then let me know what you think.

According to Victor Hugo, Grand Place is the most beautiful square in the world. We weren't quite that impressed, but Grand Place is the place to be at various times. One entire side of the square is taken up by the Hotel de Ville (city hall) The other sides are taken up by numerous buildings including restaurants, the Confederation of Belgium Breweries Museum, where for the price of a beer, you get a tour on how beer is made in Belgium and you get a beer at the end of your tour. There are also numerous lanes leading out of the Grand Place. Sort of like 'all roads lead to Rome' At 8:00 PM, there is a musical light show in the Grand Place which lasts for almost a half hour. The square is usually packed for this, we went to see it twice. The light display is choreographed with the music. On Sunday mornings there is a bird market in the square. We had read about it and came to see what it was. Just as advertised, there were birds for sale, every kind you can imagine, from starlings to toucans. We spent an hour wandering around looking at the merchandise. The Mannekin Pis, the famous little statue of a boy peeing, who the city keeps dressed in fancy garments is just about a block away. The grand place undoubtedly was the center of old Brussels and still maintains that position today.
