Description: The Temple of Philae was started by Ptolemy II, a Roman who took the throne after Alexander's death. The temple, along with many that sat on the banks of the river Nile, was almost lost when the damming project in Aswan created Lake Nasser. This and several other monuments/temples were relocated to higher ground in an effort to preserve the history. The temple tells the story of Osiris, Isis' husband and the God of the afterlife. He is dismembered and killed by his brother Seth. Isis gathers his body parts and uses her magic to bring him back to life. Their son Horus ultimately defeats his uncle Seth and kills him in battle. A beautiful temple, set on the water and only accessible by boat, it is one of the better-preserved sites in Aswan.
