Steamboat

Since this was only my second time on skis, Steamboat was a good place to relearn. It has plenty of green, blue, and black hills for any type of skier. There was one slope with moguls and another slope with snowboarding… stuff. It looked like a skateboard park with pipes and jumps; sorry, I know nothing about snowboarding, but many people who do enjoyed it below us on the lift. Every lift operator was friendly. Considering they had to put up with ski idiots like myself all day, I couldn’t believe how jovial they were. Every one of them had a sincere hello, even at the end of the day. Since it was Christmas weekend, the slopes were crowded, but not overwhelming. Steamboat was a family friendly resort and children were everywhere, most of whom skied better then I did. Turned out Christmas Day was the best day to ski because families stayed in their rooms to open presents, and for the first two hours we had the slopes to ourselves. Lift tickets are normally $60 to $70, however, Christmas weekend was a whopping $76 per day (for two adults, two days, that’s $304). Even though that’s reasonable compared to other Colorado resorts, please pardon me while I pick my jaw up off the floor. Fortunately, Steamboat was a good mountain to ski and lifts were operated by exceptional people. Despite the crowds, the longest lift line we were in was 3 minutes. It may not have all the pizzazz of Aspen or the adventure of Copper Mountain, but Steamboat Springs was perfect for us.

Steamboat is a mountain for skiing enthusiasts. We found that, contrary to what we heard, it was not a good mountain for beginners or kids. There are few wide green trails (most are narrow and crowded), and the easy blues are connected by difficult runs. The ski school was a big disappointment, compared to Deer Valley and the Canyons.

But, but, but... If you can handle more difficult blues, you will love Steamboat. The variety of advanced intermediate terrain was awesome. Long runs, great scenery, and we loved the way we could work one section of the mountain at a time and then move on. Food was above average, as was service. They need to add some bars to the other chairs for nervous parents.

Take my advice--come in good shape. The air was thinner, and the runs were longer than I expected, and that took a couple of days to get used to. Also, we got into the habit of taking the gondola down in the evening. The upper mountain is far superior for conditions late in the season.

We liked La Montana but would give the Butcher's Shop a miss next time. Ragnar's was outstanding for lunch, as was the Slopeside Grill.

This was absolutely amazing, with so much mountain and terrain. I did some amazing epic tree runs down steep terrain on my board over small drops and tight turns. There are lots of moguls for the skiers, but there are groomed runs right beside them. The terrain park is sweet, with lots of room to get some air. It has a huge half-pipe and a smaller one next to it.

I loved the skiing--don't get me wrong--but I was very saddened to see the city sprawl of condos, hotels, and fast-food chains below. I ski as much for the snow beneath my skis as I do for the mountain vistas, the expanse of mountainscapes, and the feeling that there is something greater than man out there. I skied Purgatory 2 weeks after Steamboat, and though the mountain was smaller, it still felt better, freeing, alive!

The weather was very mild. I think highs were around 39. The skiing was very good high in the mountains, but because of melting conditions, the lower areas were not so good late in the day.

We found this a great time to go out there. The crowds were minimal. The week before is Presidents Day week, and the week after, spring break starts.
