Mt.Fuji-Hakone 1day return by Shinkansen

What makes this the ideal tour is that basically everything is taken care for you. You get on the tour bus at about 9am, and the bus arrives at the first stop, the Mt. Fuji visitors center, at about 11am. The view from this point (on a clear day) is breathtaking - they give about 20 minutes to look around and take pictures, buy gifts, etc. The next stop is the 5th station or 4th, depending on the weather (too much snow and you only get to the 4th station), but either way is a great view into Hakone. The next stop is the Highland Hotel, where lunch is served (included in the price) Western-style. I would have preferred Japanese, but that's just me. The views of Mt. Fuji from the hotel are really nice postcard material!

Next stop is a cruise on Lake Ashi (that's not the Japanese name), and it's a 30-minute ride on the lake which takes you to next stop. The lake itself is okay, but nothing to see, really, I thought. Next stop was Mt. Konagatake aerial cableway, a ride to the top of Mt. Konagatake, and from this point of view you can see Mt. Fuji (on your left) and get a simply amazing view of the valley. You get to spend about an hour and a half on the top of the mountain. The next and last stop is Odawara train station, where you'll have reserved seats back to Tokyo on the super-fast Shinkansen train.

I think this is an ideal day tour for anyone that wants to see Mt. Fuji and the surrounding areas for $150, food and transportation included; I think it was a great deal.

Hakone and Mt. Fuji

We left the hotel at 7:30 AM for Shinjuku for our trip to Hakone. We took an Odakyu Express train (they call it Romance Car) and headed for Hakone-Yumoto. The entire trip to Hakone cost us around 5,500 yen (called Hakone Free Pass). This includes the trip from Shinjuku to Hakone and back and all the trips within Hakone described below. The trip from Shinjuku (in Tokyo) to Hakone-Yumoto was about 2 hours and we then took the 40-min scenic rail ride from Hakone-Yumoto to Gora. From Gora we took the 10-min cable ride to Sounzan. Here we saw some cherry blossoms and took pictures. From Sounzan we rode in a bus to Owakudani and had an authentic Japanese lunch in one of the restaurants there.

Owakudani is a place where there are still sulfuric lava fissures being emitted from volcanic rocks. The place smelled of burning sulfur. From there we then took the 28-min ropeway (cable car) ride to Togendai located at the edge of Lake Ashi. Once we arrived at Lake Ashi we boarded one of the three pirate sightseeing ships for Hakone-matchi at the other side of the lake. This is where one can have the best view of Mt. Fuji but unfortunately it was cloudy that day and Mt. Fuji was nowhere to be seen. (Actually the best time to catch the majestic Mt. Fuji is during winter so I plan to visit it again some time during winter, God willing.) It took us 30 minutes to go across the lake. We left Hakone at around 15:30 and we headed directly to Tokyo Disneyland.
