Everglades Alligator Farm

If your destination is the Flamingo Lodge in the Everglades then you can't miss this attraction as it is right on the way. When my wife first mentioned visiting this attraction, the first thing that came to my mind was "TOURIST TRAP." However, after visiting I came away with a completely different feeling. Being able to see the alligators, snakes and other wild animals in their native habitat is very educational.

It was amazing to watch as one of the workers went inside the fence to feed the alligators. When asked, "How many times have you been bitten," he replied, "Only once." I have to admit I thought I was going to witness his second bite as one of the alligators began to sneak up on him from behind. But a quick drop of the bucket and some nimble foot work, kept him out of the grasp of the six foot long alligator.

The airboat ride was the most exciting part of the whole day for me, as the driver gave me a ride through the Everglades I don't think I will ever forget.

This is a real working alligator farm. This farm located at the edge of the Everglades started in 1982 as a simple airboat ride attraction, and has since evolved into the home of more than 3,000 alligators and reptiles that people love to visit today.

Located right on the edge of Everglades National Park, the farm offers tours and wildlife shows to those who want to experience the famous wetlands. In 1985, the State of Florida permitted commercial farming of alligators and Mr. Hudson opened the first such farm in Dade County. Commercial farming was correctly seen as a way to insure the preservation of this reptile, which had once been placed on the endangered species list by the Federal Government. The reptile is one of the few animals to be removed from the endangered species list. In fact, Florida now allows controlled alligator hunts just to keep the population under control.

Just before entering the Everglades National Park via Homestead, you have the option to go straight instead of right towards the Everglades (right next to the prison). The road leads to the Alligator Farm, where they farm raise hunderds of alligators. It is a lot of fun to see alligators in all sizes and shapes. They also have a snake show, alligator show and you can take a fun air boat ride.
