Mendocino Headlands

Drive west through the village of Mendocino to land's end for one of nature's great spectacles, Mendocino Headlands is an awesome meeting of land and sea, with spectacular rock formations, natural rock arches, caves, and waves crashing against the cliffs. I can easily spend hours just sitting and watching this unending show. During winter to early spring, it is also a prime whale-watching spot, as the California grey whales pass through on their annual migration to and from the Sea of Cortez.

Village of Mendocino

The village of Mendocino is like coming across a quaint New England town on some back road. As you twist and turn on Highway l along a magnificent and rugged coast, you suddenly get your first view of the village set on a long bluff. Looking like a set from some old movie, you quickly realize it is indeed a living, breathing community.

Mendocino is one of those rare places where you can park all day and just explore. Full of shops, cafes, and historical sites, it is easy to lose yourself in. My wife and I found our major highlights to be walking and shopping along Main Street, eating at the locally famous Mendo Burgers, walking to the edge of the bluff to watch kayakers pass through a sinkhole in the cliff, and listening to some of the free spirits who play instruments in hopes of some spare change.

Sweeping views of the Northern California coast, cliffs plunging to the ocean, waves crashing on offshore rocks, natural stone arches and caverns. This is one dramatic slice of coastline. Take the main street through "The Village," as the locals call Mendocino, follow it around to where land ends, and you're at the headlands. Dress warm and wear sturdy walking shoes to explore this spectacle. Also, don't forget the binoculars, as from fall through spring the California grey whales migrate just offshore.
