Picnic Point

Have a picnic on Picnic Point.

For well over 500 years people have been walking out the 3/4 mile peninsula that juts out into Lake Mendota to enjoy the beautiful scenery in the heart of Madison. American Indians used this area to erect dozens of effigy mounds. Their exact purpose is not completely understood. And while the mound building has ceased, there is still lots of activity as students from the University of Wisconsin and other folks like myself walk, run, bike, camp and fish while enjoying the killer views of the city on the other side of the lake. One of our favorite places to picnic on a sunny afternoon. Picnic Point should not be missed.

This beautiful walk will take you along the shore of Lake Mendota. It begins at the Student Union on campus, and traces the lake out to a wooded point which is quite pretty. This is a very relaxing walk.

UW-Madison is a Big 10 University, which has a reputation as a progressive institution of learning. It is also a beautiful campus with many interesting things to see. A walk up Bascom Hill to see the statue of Abraham Lincoln will take a visitor to the heart of the campus. While looking around, one can swing by Babcock Hall to try some UW-made ice cream. If you get thirsty while exploring, stop by the Rathskeller in the Student Union for a beer. There is often live music there. After that head out to the Union Terrace, which overlooks beautiful lake Mendota. Simply wandering around campus is quite an interesting experience.
