Old Pisa Walking Tour

The tour will probably take 3 – 4 hours (it’s up to you how much time you spend visiting Campo dei Miracoli masterpieces). From Piazza della Stazione take Viale Gramsci (useful Postal Office on your right). The street brings you shortly to the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II with monument to the first king of the united Italy in the middle of the round square. Take Corso Italia from here and continue to walk northwards. From the Piazza XX Settembre we enjoyed marvelous view of the medieval palaces on the right bank of the Arno River. Bridge Ponte di Mezzo brings you to the Piazza Garibaldi. Giuseppe Garibaldi monument stands in the middle of the small square. On the Piazza you can find a café, pizzeria and gelateria (ice-cream shop). We recharged our batteries here and continued along the Borgo Stretto. The arcades of Borgo Stretto invite visitors to wander around and treat themselves to elegant Italian fashions. A few minutes later we noticed a lovely church on the right. Pleasant walk continues along Via Carducci. In the end of the street visitors can see the stretch of the ancient walls and a medieval gate. It’s time to turn left at Via Cardinal Matfi; you cannot miss the turn – the Leaning Tower is looming in the end of the road. The street brings you to an entrance to the Campo dei Miracoli. Museo del Opera del Duomo and a public washroom is on your left. The Pisans claim that the Campo dei Miracoli is one of the most beautiful places in the world. It is not a square but a picturesque meadow (Campo means meadow) or rather a huge lawn. It looks like the cathedral, baptistery and campanile grew from the ground... Returning from the Field of Miracles, we took Via Santa Maria; in the end of the street turning left. Narrow street brought us to the unexpectedly large square. The Piazza Cavalieri (the Knights Square) was the ancient center of Pisa. The Roman Forum once stood here. Here are the Church of San Stefano and the Palazzo dell Orologio (the Clock Palace). The palace was the place where Count Ugolino della Gherardesco was imprisoned and condemned to die of starvation, as narrated by Dante in the ‘Divine Comedy’. From the square we return to the Piazza Garibaldi. Easy 10 minutes walk along familiar Corsa Italia and Viale Gramsci brought us back to the train station. As you can see, there is more to see in Pisa that the Leaning Tower (and we only scratched the surface).
