The baptistery

The Baptistery is a circular building with interesting architecture and some nice art inside. The pulpit was designed by Nicola Pisano. The domed interior is famous for its unusual acoustics, as our tour guide demonstrated.

This is an enormous building which was begun in 1152 by a man known as Deotisalvi, which means God Save You. You can almost get lost in this huge place. The buildings archecture is a blend od many styles:the lower half has typical Tuscan-Romanesque stripes and the upper half a Gothic ensemble of gables and pinnacles. Nicola Pisano's pulpit, built in 1260, is really impressive. I was there during a concert and the dome's acoustics are astounding...the choir was clear from one end of the nave to the other.

This cavernous baptistery was completed around 1290 by Pisano and his father, long before the son's work on the Duomo pulpit had begun. It's not that thrilling to check out except to hear the amazing acoustics. A local demonstrated the ringing quality and amplification that the dome can produce by singing up towards the ceiling.

This is right across from the Duomo, you'll see it when you exit the cathedral. Inside, there is a famous pulpit with wonderful carving. This is all gothic in it's glory. However, after spending time inside the Duomo, it was definitely not up to par in terms of expectations.
